Friends, you can guess his greatness from the fact that he fought a total of 61 fights professionally in his life. Out of which he won brilliantly in 56 matches and had to face defeat only five times.
But friends, calling Ali only the king of boxing would be like reducing his respect because his charisma outside the boxing ring has made Ali one of the greatest personalities in the world and has given him a different identity all over the world. Apart from being the king of the boxing ring, Ali was also a revolutionary social worker who strongly raised his voice against the atrocities being committed on the black people of America. So friends, without wasting your time, let us get to know The Greatest Muhammad Ali a little closer and try to learn some inspirational things from his amazing life.
Muhammad Ali was born on January 17, 1942 in a place named Louisville in the state of Kentucky, USA. His name in childhood was Cassius Marcellus Clay, but later he changed his name to Muhammad Ali after converting to Islam. About which I will tell you in detail further in this Blog. Friends. Ali had to suffer racial discrimination since childhood because of his color because at the time when he was born, racism was at its peak and all the facilities were divided according to the black or white color of the people. Once in his childhood, a shopkeeper refused to drink water from Ali merely because of his colour, and this hurt his heart.
At the same time Ali decided to end this discrimination. Friends, Ali’s boxing also started with a very interesting incident. What happened was that when Ali was 12 years old, his father gifted him a bicycle. Ali loved that bicycle very much and took care of it with all his heart. But unfortunately someone stole his bicycle. Which made him very sad. But Ali decided that he would catch the thief himself without anyone’s help and punish him. With this in mind, he went to his acquaintance, a police uncle, and then told him about the bicycle theft and asked him how to catch the thief.
Responding to this, uncle said, Son, a thief is not caught just like that. To catch and punish a thief, it is very important to know boxing. Ali took this seriously and immediately started learning boxing. But as time passed, he developed a passion for boxing. Then six years later, at the 1960 Rome Olympics, the world saw Ali’s true form when his fist struck gold. At that time Ali was only 18 years old. After winning the gold medal in the 1960 Rome Olympics, he became very popular among the American people.
But Ali’s real challenge in boxing came at the age of 22, when he faced boxer Sunny Liston, famous for brutally attacking his opponents. Friends, at that time no one had the courage to stand in front of Liston. But Muhammad Ali won that match by defeating Liston. And his victory created an outcry in the boxing world. However, some people were still considering it as just a coincidence. But the very next year, Ali once again silenced people by defeating Sunny Liston in the ring and took another step towards his dominance.
Friends, when the six feet three inches tall Mohammad Ali used to enter the ring for a fight, the souls of the opposition boxers used to tremble. But friends, due to raising voice against the atrocities on black people, there was a lot of turmoil in Mohammed Ali’s personal life and then, troubled by all these problems, Ali converted to Islam and changed his name from Cassius Marshall Clay to Mohammed Ali. Kept Ali. Ali used to call his old name the symbol of slavery. But from here his problems did not reduce but increased even more.
During the Vietnam War, Ali refused to go with the American Army, due to which all his medals were taken away from him. Apart from this, his boxing license and passport were also confiscated and he was banned and sentenced to five years in jail. But Mohammad Ali’s courage still did not fade. He fought against the action of the US government and eventually the court changed the decision considering the charges against him not true and removed all the restrictions imposed on him. Mohammed Ali returned to the ring in 1971 after almost three years, but he lost his first match after his return and with this his record of never losing was broken.
But in the very next fight, Ali returned to the winning path and since then never looked back and established his dominance in boxing. Friends, Mohammad Ali is called the world’s greatest heavyweight boxer in history. He has won the Heavyweight Championship three times. Ultimately, breaking all the boxing records, he fought the last fight of his career in 1981 and then in 1984, he developed a disease called Parkinson’s. Due to the disease, his hands, legs as well as his tongue started trembling. But Ali’s struggle continued till his last days and he continued to take steps towards peace and friendship across the world. He got America’s biggest awards in 2005.
Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Friends, if we talk about Ali’s personal life, he married four times and had a total of nine children, seven sons and two daughters. Among those children, his youngest daughter Laila Ali has also been an excellent boxer. Muhammad Ali did not refuse to give autograph to any of his fans because when he was young, he had asked for an autograph from the then famous boxer Sugar Ray Robinson. But Robinson did not give him an autograph and went ahead making the excuse of not having time.
Ali was very saddened by Robinson’s statement and did not want any of his fans to be heartbroken by his refusal. Finally, taking steps towards peace and friendship, this king of heavyweight boxing said goodbye to this world on June 3, 2016.
